Copenhagen & Malmö

19/09/2021

At the beginning of September, we went to Copenhagen, Denmark, and we immediately combined this with a one-day visit to the Swedish city of Malmö, which can only be reached from Copenhagen via a bridge.

Travel to Copenhagen and transport from the airport

We flew to Denmark by plane from Prague - more companies fly there, but we chose such a low budget option - Ryanair. The flight lasted about an hour and a half.

There is an M2 metro station right at Copenhagen Airport, so the transport links to the center are more than friendly. A ticket for 75 minutes and 3 zones (enough for the whole center) costs DKK 36 and is valid from purchase. The services run every 4-6 minutes, 15-20 minutes at night and the journey to central Copenhagen at Nørreport or Kongens Nytorv takes 15 minutes.

You can also use 24-hour tickets for DKK 80 or 73-hour tickets for DKK 200 (valid for zones 1-4). Two children under the age of 12 can travel with an adult for free. ATTENTION - Multi-day tickets are also valid from the time of purchase, so it is not possible to buy a ticket in advance and use it, for example, the next day, as it is usual for Prague or Paris.

For us, I recommend their "transport planner" to find connections in Denmark

and / or Google maps.

Copenhagen Card

I definitely recommend buying a Copenhagen Card. Not only will it give you access to 86 monuments, museums, galleries and other attractions, but you also have free public transport in Copenhagen!

The card can be bought online, but we bought it right at the airport.

The price of the card is according to the length of validity: 24 hours for 54 EUR / 48 hours for 77 EUR / 72 hours for 93 EUR or 120 hours for 121 EUR.

First impression of Copenhagen

As soon as we got off the subway, we were fascinated by the ubiquitous number of bicycles and cyclists. Copenhagen is as famous for bicycles as, for example, Amsterdam.

Our first steps were to the port, where we took a Copenhagen card ride on a boat with an English guide. I can definitely recommend it, it was beautiful. We drove around the port of Nyhavn, The Opera House and warships through small canals in the city leading, for example, around the former royal palace of Christiansborg, The Royal Library or The Museum of Architecture.

What did we visit?

After we went on a boat ride, we went to eat and accommodate. If you are planning Copenhagen as a low budget trip, I must warn you that food is quite expensive there.

We fell in love with Torvehallerne, which is like an indoor market where you can get lots of good food - but don't forget to check out the opening hours before you go there!

If you will visit Torvehallerne, you must try the kanelsnegle, both cinnamon and chocolate at Laura's Bakery are awesome!

We stayed at Airbnb flat and it was great

Here is a link to a map I created to visit Copenhagen and Malmö:

https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1kYt6SUzUEPD1x21Fjq7agJaFJJt_cEYO&usp=sharing

You will find there most of the places we have visited. These were, for example: the Zoo, the Little Mermaid (but it was a disappointment for us, to be honest), the town hall, the winter residence of Queen Amalienborg, the square, Frederik's church and other churches, parks and other various monuments.

Nyhavn

Nyhavn

A famous tourist destination you all know for sure is Nyhavn. The long harbor with lots of colorful houses is an iconic place visited by almost all tourists. And no wonder! It is absolutely magical. I definitely recommend going there, buy a great ice cream in the middle of the harbor in the Parlor gelateria on the corner and sit on the edge of the harbor for a while and just enjoy the local atmosphere. The colorful port continues with a colorful modern bridge over the canal to another part of the city. If you want a nice view of The Opera, The Library and The Museum of Architecture, be sure to go there.

Tivolli park

Tivolli Park is a place which is worth the attention. We were there in the evening when it was already dark and it was an unforgettable experience. It was full of colors everywhere and everything was beautifully lit. It was magical.

Attractions in Tivolli park

Tivolli Park is an amusement park with many attractions. such as carousels, roller coasters, or for example a pirate ship, or free fall. Admission is free with the Copenhagen card, but individual attractions are paid for and it's not exactly cheap. There are also plenty of food stalls and restaurants.

Malmö

After enjoying Copenhagen, we decided to explore Malmö in Sweden, which is only a bridge away from Copenhagen. There are several ways to get there - you can rent a car, take a train or a bus.

We chose the train for the trip there and the Flixbus for the trip back (to see the bridge from both the bottom and the top).

The journey itself was an experience! But if I had to choose now - I would choose a train. It was a bit more expensive but more comfortable and also a bit faster

How was Malmö?

It is also a very nice city, but definitely do not expect so many things to see here as in Copenhagen.

We first went to St. Peter's Church and then we visited the local castle, where we came across a mill and a food festival nearby. We also caught the beautiful Lilla Torg square, in its surroundings there were many shops and I bought amazing and comfortable shoes there! And finally we went in the direction of Turning Torso, from which we continued to the beach, where we bought ice cream in Gelato by Smak and enjoyed the sun. On the way back to the bus, we came across horse races with wagons, which was an interesting experience because we never saw it :D.

Yeah, and one more thing - don't forget to try the traditional Swedish meatballs, it's a real treat! We received a recommendation for Bullen - Två Krögare.
